The Regional Rail Passes (JR Hokkaido / JR East / JR West / JR Kyushu) differ from the standard Japan Rail Pass that covers the entire country. Each regional pass covers a particular geographic area of Japan and encourages you to limit your travel to the attractions of that area. These passes may be most advantageous to visitors who have been to Japan before and have seen the main sites of Central Japan. On a second trip you may want to explore one of the lesser-known areas: the forests and ski-slopes of Hokkaido, the hot springs of northeast Honshu (JR East), the charming old houses of Kurashiki (JR West), or Nagasaki, the romantic home of Madame Butterfly (JR Kyushu). But even the first time traveler might take good advantage of a regional pass by staying in a major city like Tokyo or Osaka first, and then using a regional pass to explore the surrounding regions in short trips. |
 |
- The regional Passes are available to travelers entering Japan on a non-Japanese passport with "Temporary Visitor" entry status.
- It is very important to note that Japanese passport holder cannot use any of the regional passes; they can only use the standard Japan Rail Pass if they meet the overseas residence requirements.
For a complete description of this limitation please see the official site.
|
Unlike the Japan Rail Pass which can only be purchased outside of Japan, the regional rail passes can all be purchased within Japan as well as overseas, at sales office at major stations within the region where they can be used.
If you purchase the pass before arrival, please contact our distributors. On arrival in the region you can exchange the voucher for the actual rail pass at exchange office and proceed to make reservations for specific trains, free of charge.
|
At present there are no regional rail passes offered for the JR Central area (the central part of Honshu between Tokyo and Kyoto), or for the smallest of the four main islands, Shikoku. Of course both of these areas are included in the nationwide standard Japan Rail Pass. Although it does not offer an unlimited regional pass, JR Central does offer its own tours, especially between Tokyo and Kyoto. Information can be found on the JR
Central site.
